le corbusier (1887 - 1965): real name Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, was one of the dominant forces in twentieth-century architecture. Born in Switzerland, in 1887 and spent most of his life in France. In 1910 and 1911 he came to Germany and got acquainted with the Bauhaus design movement. He taught architecture and was associated with the `Congres Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne.

Le Corbusier is without doubt the most influential, most admired, and most maligned architect of the twentieth century. Through his writing and his buildings, he is the main player in the Modernist story, his visions of homes and cities as innovative as they are influential.

The range of armchairs and sofas are the epitome of French modernist design. Originally created for the 1929 Salon d’Automne, they were an integral part of a collection of interior “equipment” demonstrating a new luxury and style in tubular steel.
